Named among the top 10 beaches in the country in 2026, it offers everything that the most celebrated Thai beaches promise — pale fine sand, clear turquoise water, a dramatic limestone headland — without the crowds that have made those beaches famous.

The beach stretches for several kilometres, backed by casuarina groves rather than resort hotels. The water is calm and clear, sheltered by the Khao Kalok headland to the south, and the sand is the kind of pale, fine-grained variety that stays cool underfoot even in the afternoon heat.

The consistent onshore winds make Pak Nam Pran one of Thailand's best kite boarding destinations. Several operators offer lessons and equipment hire on the beach, catering to all levels from complete beginners to experienced riders.

The hill itself is worth climbing: a steep path leads to a large golden Buddha and a temple with panoramic views over the Gulf of Thailand and the coastline stretching south. The hill is also home to a large troop of macaque monkeys — entertaining to observe, though best approached with caution.

The beach at Pranburi stretches for kilometres without interruption — no hotels, no beach clubs, no vendors. The sand is wide and the water is clear, and the only sounds are the wind in the casuarinas and the occasional fishing boat passing offshore.

Pranburi beach is not a destination for people who want facilities or entertainment. It is a destination for people who want to walk for an hour without seeing another person, or sit on the sand and watch the light change over the Gulf of Thailand. For that, it is exceptional.

The Pranburi River Forest Park, just inland from the beach, is one of the finest mangrove environments in Thailand — a kayak trip through the channels is one of the best experiences in the region.

Khao Kalok is the limestone headland that marks the southern end of Pak Nam Pran beach, and the small beach at its base is one of the most dramatically beautiful in the region. The headland rises steeply from the sand, the water is clear and calm in the shelter of the rocks, and the combination of limestone, sea, and sky makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the Gulf Coast.

The beach is small and can only be reached on foot or by longtail boat — which keeps the crowds away entirely. It is best visited in the morning, when the light falls on the headland from the east.

Dolphin Bay, near the town of Pranburi, is the departure point for boat trips to the islands of the Sam Roi Yot archipelago and the snorkelling and diving sites around them. The beach itself is pleasant but unremarkable; the reason to come here is the water activities and the access to the national park.

The bay is named for the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins that are occasionally spotted in the waters offshore — a genuinely memorable encounter if you are lucky enough to see them.

Getting there: A hire car or private driver is the most practical way to explore the beaches south of Hua Hin. The coastal road is good and the distances are manageable — Pak Nam Pran is 40 minutes from Hua Hin, Dolphin Bay is about an hour.

Best time to visit: November to April for the best weather. The Gulf Coast is largely unaffected by the southwest monsoon that brings heavy rain to Phuket and Krabi during this period, making it one of the most reliable beach destinations in Thailand.

Water conditions: The Gulf of Thailand is a sheltered sea and the water is generally calm. The best swimming conditions are from November to April; from May to October the water can be choppier, though rarely dangerous.
