Weather. The Gulf Coast enjoys its best weather from November to April, when the northeast monsoon brings dry skies and temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties. This is ideal golf weather: warm enough to play in shorts, cool enough to walk 18 holes without discomfort.

Value. Green fees at Hua Hin's top courses are a fraction of what equivalent quality would cost in Europe, the United States, or Japan. Caddies — included in the green fee at most courses — are knowledgeable, helpful, and add significantly to the experience.

Accessibility. Hua Hin is three hours south of Bangkok by road, or a short domestic flight. The town has good hotel and villa infrastructure, excellent restaurants, and a range of activities for non-golfing members of the party.

Consistently ranked among the top courses in Asia, Black Mountain is the benchmark against which other Hua Hin courses are measured. Designed by Phil Ryan, the course winds through 320 acres of tropical landscape, with dramatic elevation changes, water features on 14 of the 18 holes, and views of the surrounding hills that are genuinely spectacular.

The clubhouse is one of the finest in the region, and the practice facilities — including a large driving range, short game area, and putting greens — are excellent. Black Mountain also has a good on-site restaurant and a well-stocked pro shop.

Banyan is a newer course that has quickly established itself as one of the best in the region. The layout is challenging and varied, with a mix of parkland and links-style holes that reward accurate ball-striking over raw distance. The greens are among the fastest and most consistent in Hua Hin.

The course is set against a backdrop of the Tenasserim Hills, and the views from several of the elevated tees are extraordinary. Banyan is particularly well regarded for the quality of its caddies and the efficiency of its operations.

A more traditional layout than Black Mountain or Banyan, Majestic Creek is a mature course with large trees, well-established rough, and a design that rewards course management over power. It is a favourite among regular visitors who appreciate a course that improves with familiarity.

The club has a relaxed, members-club atmosphere that is quite different from the more resort-oriented courses, and the green fees are among the most competitive in the area.

One of the oldest courses in the Hua Hin area, Palm Hills has been recently renovated and now offers a significantly improved playing experience. The course is set in a valley surrounded by hills, with a layout that makes good use of the natural terrain. It is a good choice for a second or third round when you want something a little different from the more famous courses.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Springfield is one of the most prestigious courses in Thailand. The layout is demanding — Nicklaus courses rarely give anything away easily — but the quality of the design, the conditioning of the course, and the overall experience make it worth the challenge.

Springfield is particularly well suited to lower-handicap golfers who want a genuine test of their game.

For a dedicated golf trip, three to five rounds over a week is a comfortable pace — enough to play the best courses without exhausting yourself or the budget. Most visitors play 18 holes in the morning, finishing by early afternoon, which leaves the rest of the day free for other activities.

Tee times at the most popular courses — particularly Black Mountain and Banyan — should be booked in advance during the high season from November to April. Most courses have online booking systems, or your villa team can arrange this on your behalf.

Caddies are included in the green fee at most courses and are an integral part of the experience. A good caddie will read the greens, advise on club selection, and carry your bag for 18 holes — all for a tip of around 300–400 baht (approximately $8–11) at the end of the round. Treat your caddie well and the experience will be significantly better.

All courses have well-stocked pro shops and equipment hire available. If you are travelling without clubs, hire sets are generally of good quality and reasonably priced. However, if you play regularly, bringing your own clubs is worth the effort.
